The trulli of Alberobello are typical houses made of limestone, white in color and with a characteristic conical-shaped roof. They represent an important example of dry stone slab construction, a technique that dates back to prehistoric times but is still used today in Puglia.
More precisely, the trulli are dry stone huts, with the roof made up of dry-set slabs, which traditionally served as a temporary shelter or permanent home for small landowners or agricultural workers.
The halo of legend that surrounds the trulli of Alberobello is due to the mysterious white inscriptions which, even today, can be observed on the characteristic conical roofs of the trulli of Alberobello. These are magical and propitiatory symbols, on the meaning of which the debate is still open.
That’s not all: on the top of the roofs of the trulli of Alberobello there are decorative pinnacles which, according to many, had the purpose of chasing away evil influences and bad luck.
